Package Development Study
A customer is launching a new product in response to a market research study. The initial launch will be for a test market with 100,000 units produced. The packaging engineers are given a final "go" on the project with a launch date scheduled in 3 months. Their goal is to develop a package to protect the oxygen sensitive product and provide a shelf-life of 90 days. If successful, a major launch is slated for six months with 1 million units scheduled.
Initially, the packaging Engineer was going to follow their "standard protocol" for the test launch of the product. (Standard protocol typically is developing the best package possible with the dollars budgeted for the project. Also, time to market is an issue and over packaging is common. After a successful launch and the product has gained marke6t acceptance, the package is then re-engineered and reduced until the optimal price/performance is reached. This often takes several iterations.)
