National Broiler Council Announces Name Change

As of Jan. 1, the trade association for the chicken production and processing industry, previously known as the National Broiler Council, became the National Chicken Council (NCC). NCC's decision to change the association's name was based on changes in the chicken industry, and a move to clear up any confusion about its mission.

The term "broiler" had been the recognized name for a chicken raised specifically for its meat. Over the years, however, the distinction has eroded as nearly all chicken in the supermarket consists of broilers (or fryers, which means the same thing).

In addition to the new name, the NCC has also created a new logo that proclaims "Chicken: America's Favorite."

Americans currently buy more than 74 lb of chicken every year, which in 1998 was about $35 billion worth of chicken.

The address and phone number remain the same: National Chicken Council, 1015 15th Street NW, Suite 930, Washington DC 20005, phone (202) 296-2622, fax (202) 293-4005.
