Meridian Completes USDA Meat Processing Facility In Chicago

Meridian Design Build recently wrapped construction on an 84,000sf USDA meat processing plant for Amylu Foods within Chicago’s Stockyards Industrial Park at 1400 W. 44th Street. Amylu has relocated their operations to the new facility from their West Loop plant where they operated for over 95 years, a move that has allowed them to significantly increase production capacity and broaden their line of offerings.

The new sausage processing plant includes 56,000 sf of production/cold storage space, a -10 °F freezer, and a 16,500 sf 2-story corporate office space featuring separate raw and cooked employee facilities, a test kitchen, and laboratory functions. Meridian’s work on the project included the design and installation of process systems and piping necessary to support production equipment including steam, sanitation, compressed air, venting, and process gas. An expandable central ammonia refrigeration plant was installed to accommodate plant cooling and production loads.

The project was completed on a design-build basis with Architectural services provided by Harris Architects. Civil engineering services were provided by Kimley-Horn.
