mpXML Becomes The GS1 US Meat And Poultry Workgroup

Global Information Standards Organization Carries on Meat and Poultry Group's Supply Chain Efficiency Mission

Lawrenceville, NJ /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Meat and Poultry Business-to-Business Data Standards Organization, also known as mpXML, has been integrated into the GS1 US Meat and Poultry Workgroup. Former mpXML members will continue to support the movement toward standards-based business processes and data synchronization in the meat and poultry industry through collaboration with GS1 US, a member of the global information standards organization GS1. GS1 Standards are the most widely used supply chain standards in the world.

Both groups were founded in the early 2000s as a way for the meat and poultry industry to discuss and collaborate on data synchronization and supply chain issues. mpXML focused their efforts on four key areas: data synchronization, electronic data interchange (EDI) messaging, product classification and product traceability. During mpXML's tenure, seven guidelines were published that addressed a range of topics from traceability implementation to global product classification. The GS1 US Meat and Poultry Workgroup will continue to evaluate similar business challenges that mpXML began to address, including e-commerce and regulatory compliance.

"mpXML pioneered the use of GS1 Standards in the meat and poultry industry after learning that proprietary data formats slow down the flow of data between partners, increase IT costs and generally complicate the process of capturing equivalent data from different formats," said Tom Marchisello, senior director, Grocery Retail, GS1 US. "While mpXML accomplished its goal of creating a solid B2B e-commerce foundation, GS1 US will continue to build on that progress and facilitate the ongoing exchange of best practices in data management in the meat and poultry supply chain."
