Holfeld and their multi market rPETeCO packaging range were finalists in the Lions' Lair competition at Packaging Innovations at the end of February.

rPETeCO adds luxury to products where added value is required. The material for all market sectors including meat, poultry, fish, fresh produce, catering and non food markets is a low carbon, highly tactile rPET material available in a variety of colours with a blend of up to 90% post consumer recyclate.

The material is fully recyclable, accepted in the waste stream, raising the environmental profiles of retailers, processors and fruit growers and their marketing distributors with its non plastic appearance and low carbon manufacture exceeding Courtauld 3 objectives. The material is the result of a 3 year R&D programme supported by the FP7 European initiative. The rPET material has good insulation properties and is more temperature resistant than conventional rPET. Gas barrier properties are 20 times better than PP and the material demonstrates improved environmental qualities compared to PP as with most PP trys made from virgin  polymer there is currently no recognised, universal doorstep collection.

Specific gravity of the rPETeCO trays is reduced from 1.33 to 1.05. The resulting weight is up to 20% lighter than virgin PP trays. rPETeCO demonstrates a significant carbon reduction breakthrough offering a 28% lower carbon footprint than recycled Polypropylene. Sympthetic and strategic rib design maximises stength and therefore product protection. Holsorb is available eliminating the need for absorbent pads in the base.

Afterwards and following the presentation the company received generous acclaim from a number of influential delegates visiting the Holfeld exhibition stand at Packaging Innovations.
